How to Choose the Right-Fit School for Your Child

Happy New Year’s Day.

Redux.

After nearly two decades in admissions, September has always felt like the true beginning of a fresh year. New initiatives emerge. Plans take shape to upgrade and improve. There's an unmistakable sense of renewal that follows a summer of reflection and rest. Just as many families set resolutions in January, the start of a new school year presents an ideal opportunity for parents to establish meaningful goals for their children's success. For families with 5th or 8th graders in the East Bay, this often means considering not just a change of schools, but a change of school types entirely.

Over two decades, I've had the privilege of working with families and students as they prepare for pivotal moments in their educational journey. These transitions are undeniably significant. However, I've often observed that families set goals that are too narrow in scope: "We need to get into School X. Once we're there, School X will take care of everything." Instead, I encourage a different approach. Start by asking a simple but powerful question: Why?

The Power of "Why"

Why School X specifically? Begin by examining your goals as parents. What are you hoping to achieve? Be honest and transparent with yourself. Next, consider why School X might benefit your child from your perspective as their parent. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, ask your child directly. This last conversation may be the most challenging. You might encounter resistance to the idea of changing schools—after all, children experience time differently than adults, and change can feel overwhelming.

Throughout your search, be mindful not to simply list the features or characteristics you'd like to see in your child's school. This approach often leads to disappointment when reality doesn't match expectations.

Understanding Your Child's Voice

One of the greatest challenges parents face during a school search is recognizing that while your child's opinions are incredibly valuable, they don't always reflect their long-term interests. Children are still discovering the world around them and can be captivated by the novelty of new experiences. This natural curiosity and optimism exists even in 8th graders, particularly when they think their parents aren't paying attention.

In the Bay Area, private school admission timelines mirror those of college admissions for good reason: children need time to explore their options, and as their parents, you need ample opportunity to observe how they respond to different environments before making the best choice for your family.

Moving Forward Together

As you begin this journey, consider the value of having an experienced guide outside your immediate circle—someone who can help you clarify your motivations, goals, and objectives. At Journeys Educational Advising, we understand that finding the right school isn't just about admission; it's about finding the environment where your child will thrive.

The school search process is an investment in your child's future, and approaching it with intention, patience, and the right support can make all the difference.
