Admissions is Not Just an Application Process. It’s a Decision Process.
We help families navigate private school and college admissions with clarity, strategy, and perspective.
Serving families in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Our work focuses on a simple idea: better decisions lead to better outcomes.
What We Do
Journeys Edu helps families navigate private school and college admissions with clarity, strategy, and perspective. We guide decisions, not just applications.
Private School Admissions (PK–12) The San Francisco Bay Area independent school landscape is competitive and often opaque. We help families build thoughtful school lists, prepare for interviews, and move through each step of the application process with intention, not anxiety.
College Counseling The college process asks students to do something most adults find difficult: articulate who they are and where they are going. We help students develop clear, authentic narratives and manage the complexity of the process without losing themselves in it.
School Placement Strategy Not every school that looks right on paper is the right fit. We help families understand how different school communities actually function, what they value, and how to evaluate fit beyond reputation and rankings.
Consulting for Schools We partner with independent schools on enrollment strategy, helping leadership teams align their program, messaging, and market positioning with the realities of today's families.
Our Approach
Good advising does not add pressure to an already high-stakes process. It removes it. At Journeys Edu, our work is built on three commitments that shape every engagement.
Clarity over anxiety. Admissions can feel opaque by design. Families are left to interpret signals, read between the lines, and make consequential decisions with incomplete information. We help families understand what is actually happening at each stage, so they can move forward from a grounded place rather than a reactive one.
Strategy over reaction. The families who navigate this process well are not the ones who move fastest. They are the ones who started with a clear plan. We help families build that plan early, so each decision connects to something larger and intentional, rather than feeling like a response to whatever just arrived in the inbox.
Fit over prestige. The most selective school is not always the right school. Prestige is a proxy, and like most proxies, it obscures more than it reveals. We help families look past rankings and name recognition to identify the environments where a student will genuinely grow, contribute, and belong.
Who This Work Is For
Not every family approaches this process in the same way. This work is most effective when there is alignment in how we think about it.
We work best with families who:
Are willing to look beyond prestige and think carefully about fit
Understand that admissions is both a process and a set of decisions, and that these decisions deserve real thought
Want guidance that is honest, even when it challenges what they came in believing
This may not be the right fit for families who:
Are singularly focused on a small set of highly selective outcomes
Expect the process to be won through tactics alone
Need certainty in a process that, by its nature, cannot offer it
About Journeys Edu
Journeys Edu was founded by David Lazo, an enrollment leader with nearly two decades of experience in admissions and financial aid across independent schools and higher education, including Stanford University, Vanderbilt University, and leading Bay Area independent schools such as College Prep and Woodside Priory. He has also served as a faculty member for the Enrollment Management Association (now E3n) and regularly speaks on admissions and enrollment strategy.
Having worked inside institutions and alongside families, David brings a perspective that is rarely available from either side alone. His work is shaped by a simple belief: admissions is not just about access. It is about alignment. This distinction is what guides every conversation, every school list, and every decision families make with Journeys Edu.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
An admissions consultant helps families navigate the school search with clarity and strategy. This work includes building a thoughtful school list, preparing for interviews, guiding written responses, and helping families interpret decisions. At Journeys Edu, the work goes beyond getting in. It is about identifying environments where a student will genuinely thrive, now and over time.
-
Not every family does. Some are well-positioned to navigate the process on their own. Others benefit from an experienced, steady perspective, especially in competitive markets like the San Francisco Bay Area. The value is not in shortcuts. It is in helping families make informed decisions, ask better questions, and avoid common missteps before they become costly ones.
-
Journeys Edu approaches school admissions as both a family decision and a market-driven process. With nearly two decades of experience inside independent schools and universities, including leadership roles at College Prep, Woodside Priory, Bentley, Stanford, and Vanderbilt, we help families understand not only how to apply, but how schools think, evaluate candidates, and build their communities. The work is grounded in clarity, not pressure, and strategy, not guesswork.
-
For independent and private school admissions, most families begin 6 to 12 months before applying. Earlier conversations are often valuable, especially when thinking through school fit, learning environment, and longer-term planning. Starting early creates space for thoughtful decisions rather than reactive ones.
-
Journeys Edu supports families applying to a range of independent and private schools, primarily across the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as select boarding schools and out-of-region programs. The focus is not on a fixed list of schools; it is on identifying the right educational environments for each individual student.
-
No. Ethical advising does not guarantee outcomes. Admission decisions are made by schools, and many factors are outside any consultant's control. The goal is to help each family present themselves clearly and authentically, and to make well-informed decisions throughout the process.
-
Families who work best with Journeys Edu tend to want intentional, values-aligned guidance, not sales-driven advice or guaranteed results. If you are looking for shortcuts or a guarantee of admission to a specific school, this may not be the right match. If you want clarity, honest perspective, and experienced judgment, we invite you to start with a conversation.
-
The process typically begins with an initial conversation to understand your goals, timeline, and where you are in the admissions process. From there, we determine whether this work is the right fit and outline next steps.
